Through the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) research, we've long known that exposure to domestic violence and child abuse significantly increases the risk of cancer and heart disease. We can now report that the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention completely agree. Comparing the ACE research to the Surgeon General's report in 1964 that linked smoking, cancer, and heart disease, we can use these same principles to help prevent DV and child abuse. In this presentation, presenters Barry Goldstein and Veronica York discuss how preventing DV and child abuse can save millions of lives and trillions of dollars. Just as society came together to educate the public about the dangers of smoking, we can do the same for DV and child abuse. Access more domestic violence webinars and resources at https://www.domesticshelters.org/ Please visit the American Heart Association to learn more about the dangers of smoking and how public awareness and education helped reduce deaths and health issues related to smoking and tobacco use. Our thanks to the American Heart Association for sharing their vintage anti-smoking public service announcements.
