notes
Dr. Phil dedicates an episode of his show to different aspects of domestic violence, ranging from a mother struggling to talk about relationships with her daughter, the importance of relationship due diligence and safety planning, and a new app that sends alerts in an emergency. Below are the descriptions of the three segments of the show, as well as the timestamps for each so that you can browse to any segment more easily. Here is the link to the March 15, 2013 Dr. Phil show.
From the start of the show to 15:45, Dr. Phil works with a mother to help her realize that her intentions are good but her methods need work, as she tries to steer her teenage daughter away from dressing promiscuously, sharing revealing images and attracting the wrong guys. See additional articles on children and teens, violence, and how to deal with it successfully.
From 15:45 to 25:25, survivor Rhonda talks about how an Internet search on her boyfriend before they became a couple would have revealed he was a suspect in a disappearance. Taking simple precautions and being aware of abuser demographics can help you avoid problems down the road. And as Rhonda adds, if you get into a bad relationship, having a safety plan and sticking to it can be a difference maker.
The last few minutes of the show cover the work of Dr. Phil’s wife Robin McGraw, including her new app Aspire. Aspire looks and serves as an everyday news feed (so that isn’t easily detected by a snooping abuser) and it allows users to set up a way to alert friends and 911 in an emergency. Search “Aspire” in Google Play or the iPhone app store. Once downloaded, click “Help” on the menu to set up your Trusted Contacts (people you wish to alert in an emergency) and to learn more.
